How The Palisades and Eaton Fires Happened

A company specializing in electrical activity observed a sharp rise in power grid faults near three significant Los Angeles County fires shortly before they ignited.

Bob Marshall, CEO of Whisker Labs, told The Times that significant fault increases were recorded in the areas around the Eaton, Palisades, and Hurst fires before the incidents. These faults, often caused by tree limbs striking electrical wires or colliding, can produce sparks that may ignite fires.

"There are various activities in Eaton Canyon," Garcia noted. "The public was present when it occurred, and power lines run through the area. Our teams are investigating all potential ignition sources.

The cause of the Palisades Fire is under investigation. The fire started in the area of the Temescal Ridge Trail in Pacific Palisades. Our Firms continue to monitor the very latest information to track the origin of this monumental and terrible fire.

California Wildfires: Latest Updates

As of January 8, 2025, Southern California is grappling with multiple wildfires, notably in Pacific Palisades, Altadena, Santa Clarita, Pasadena, Malibu, and Eaton. These fires have led to significant evacuations, property damage, and tragic loss of life.

Palisades Fire

The Palisades Fire ignited near Pacific Palisades and rapidly expanded, burning over 23,000 acres. Evacuations have been ordered for areas along the Pacific Coast Highway and surrounding neighborhoods, including parts of Malibu and Santa Monica. The fire's rapid spread is attributed to strong Santa Ana winds and dry conditions.

Eaton Canyon Fire

The Eaton Fire began in Eaton Canyon in Altadena and has grown to over 14,000 acres. Evacuations have been implemented in Altadena, Pasadena, La Cañada Flintridge, and surrounding areas. The fire is advancing toward Mount Wilson in the Angeles National Forest, prompting concerns about its potential impact on communication infrastructure.

Overview of the Fires

The wildfires sweeping through Santa Clarita, Altadena, Pasadena, Santa Monica, and Malibu share a common origin in the devastating combination of extreme weather and insufficient preventative measures. Strong Santa Ana winds, record-low humidity, and prolonged drought have created the perfect storm for ignitions to spread uncontrollably.

Initial reports suggest many fires were sparked by downed power lines and dry vegetation, exacerbated by years of underinvestment by utility companies in wildfire mitigation. These fast-moving blazes have destroyed homes, displaced thousands, and challenged firefighting resources across Southern California.

As investigations continue, it becomes increasingly clear that environmental and human factors have contributed to this disaster. Understanding these causes is key to preventing similar tragedies in the future.

Malibu Fires

The Palisades Fire has affected Malibu, with evacuation orders in place for parts of the city. The fire has reached the beach in Malibu, causing significant concern among residents and authorities.
